In this section you will find 2 documents:
1) A teaching diphthongs overview with two possible sequences for teaching diphthongs.
2) A spelling patterns chart from Core Knowledge Language Arts. Some spelling patterns are used more frequently than others to spell diphthongs. This chart shows all of the spelling patterns for each sound in English. The gray bar, or "power bar" under each spelling pattern represents the frequency of that spelling pattern. This resource is from the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum, which can be accessed for free here: www.coreknowledge.org
'oo' can make two different sounds as in moon and look. These cards help children practice spelling words with both of these sounds, and hearing the difference between the two sounds.
There are two ways to spell the /ou/ sound as in shout: 'ou' and 'ow.'
'ow' and 'ou' are also "Tricky Spellings" because these letter combinations can represent more than one sound. 'ow' can also make the long o sound, and 'ou' can make the /u/ sound. Therefore, Tricky Spelling sorts are included for both patterns .
There are two ways to spell the sound /oi/: 'oi' and 'oy'
These cards provide children practice reading and spelling words with the /oi/ sound.
The /aw/ sound can be spelled 4 ways: 'aw', 'au', 'augh', and 'al'.
These cards help children to spell words with 'aw' and read words with all of these spelling patterns.
